About LPA
Dr. Kirk Vandergrift

Dr. Vandergrift is a widely respected clinical psychologist who brings compassion, authenticity, and flexibility to his therapeutic work. His approach is guided by a recognition of parallel truths: that there are always underlying reasons for the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors we struggle with, and that this does not make our struggles inevitable or unworkable.

Prior to developing Laurelhurst Psychological Associates, Dr. Vandergrift trained and worked within various VA healthcare systems, including an externship at the San Francisco VA, internship at the VA Central Western Massachusetts, and Postdoctoral Residency at the Boston VA, where he held academic appointments at Harvard University Medical School and Boston University School of Medicine. He received his doctorate from the PGSP-Stanford PsyD consortium in Palo Alto, and presently works at the VA Portland Healthcare System concurrently with his work at LPA.

While his training has involved broad, generalist experience across the spectrum of mental health presentations, Dr. Vandergrift specializes in working with men and masculinity-related topics, new and expectant fatherhood, anxiety, PTSD, panic attacks, and insomnia.

He is originally from Pittsburgh, PA and currently lives with his wife and son in Portland, OR.
Approaches to Treatment
At Laurelhurst Psychological Associates, we are dedicated to providing compassionate and individually tailored therapeutic services to individuals seeking better balance in their lives. Our client-centered approach aims to create a safe and supportive space where clients can explore their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in a non-judgmental environment. Together, we work towards growth, healing, and personal development.
Our approaches include, but are not limited to:
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD, and more open-ended, supportive therapy. Each of these lenses of therapy are practiced with a fundamental commitment to flexibility, client empowerment, and the belief that the answers to your questions and concerns exist within you, waiting to be uncovered.

LPA's therapeutic services are offered remotely through a convenient, HIPAA-compliant, secure and simple telehealth video platform. This allows clients to engage from the comfort of their home without the time and cost of commuting to their therapist's office. In-person services are not currenly being offered.
